Maid or cleaning company in Mauritius: which is better?

Hiring a maid in Mauritius makes you an employer. A cleaning company sells you a finished clean. How the two compare on cost, cover and peace of mind.

It is one of the most common questions we hear: should I hire a maid, or book a cleaning company? In Mauritius both are normal, and neither is the wrong answer. They solve different problems, and the cost comparison is not the one most people make.

What hiring a maid really involves

A maid, or femme de ménage, who works in your home regularly is your employee. That brings the obligations any employer in Mauritius has, which include paying at least the national minimum wage, paid annual and sick leave, an end of year bonus, and the employer’s social contributions. The rules change from time to time, so check them with the Ministry of Labour or the MRA before you hire rather than relying on what a neighbour pays.

None of that is a reason not to. It is a reason to compare honestly. An hourly wage is not the full cost of a maid, in the same way a salary is not the full cost of any employee.

There is also the question of cover. When a maid is ill, on leave or leaves altogether, the cleaning stops until you find someone. Recruiting, checking references and training someone into how you like your home kept is your work to do.

What a cleaning company gives you instead

A cleaning company sells you a result rather than hours. You agree a price, a team arrives with its own equipment and products, and the clean is done. If a team member is away, the company covers it. There is no contract of employment, no payslip and no contributions to manage.

The best companies publish their prices, so you know the cost before anyone visits. Ours are on our 2026 price list.

Where each one wins

A maid is better when you want help every day, and when the work goes beyond cleaning: cooking, laundry, ironing, the school run, someone in the house while you are out.

A cleaning company is better when what you want is the cleaning itself, done thoroughly and on a schedule:

  • A weekly clean that does not depend on one person being available.
  • A deep clean that resets the home, which a maid keeping on top of daily mess rarely has the time or the equipment for.
  • A move in or move out clean before a handover.
  • A holiday home or a rental between guests.
  • An office, where the cleaning has to fit around working hours.

Doing both

Plenty of households in Mauritius do both: help at home for the daily work, and a cleaning company for the weekly or deep clean. The maid’s day goes on cooking and keeping things tidy, and the heavy cleaning is done by a team with the equipment for it.

How to decide

Ask what you are actually short of. If it is an extra pair of hands every day, hire help. If it is a clean home without becoming an employer, book a clean. Our guide on how to choose a cleaning company covers what to ask before you do.

Questions

Short answers to what we are asked most.

Is a maid cheaper than a cleaning company in Mauritius?

Per hour, often yes. Per clean, not always. A maid's cost includes leave, an end of year bonus, social contributions and the time covered when they are away, none of which appear in an hourly rate. A cleaning company's price is the whole price.

What are my obligations if I employ a maid in Mauritius?

A household employee is a worker under Mauritian labour law, so the usual employer obligations apply, including at least the national minimum wage, paid leave and an end of year bonus. Check the current rules with the Ministry of Labour or the MRA before you hire.

Can a cleaning company replace a maid completely?

For cleaning, yes. For daily help such as cooking, laundry or looking after children, no. Many households keep help at home for the daily work and book a cleaning company for the weekly or deep clean.

Who provides the equipment and products?

With a maid, you buy them. A cleaning company brings its own, which for us means professional equipment rather than whatever is under the sink.
